The Pros and Cons of Dental Implants Atlanta, GA

The Pros and Cons of Dental Implants

If you have one or more missing teeth and are actively seeking to fill in the gaps in your smile, you’ve probably read about dental implants. This innovative option for restoring lost dentition has been hailed by the dental industry as the gold standard of tooth replacement options. Dental implants simulate the complete structure of a natural tooth, both the above-gum crown portion and the root beneath the gum. Even though you’ve heard good things about dental implants, as a mindful consumer, you want to know all the facts before talking to your dentist. To help you learn more about dental implants, Dr. David Zelby, an Atlanta implant dentist, discusses some of the advantages and drawbacks of this revolutionary procedure.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Of course, a single procedure wouldn’t earn the accolades of an entire industry without offering patients a number of significant advantages above and beyond those offered by traditional dental prosthetics. Some of the advantages of dental implants include:

  • Since dental implants replace tooth roots, they help maintain healthy bone density within the jaw.
  • With proper care, dental implants can last anywhere from 20-40 years.
  • Dental implants can be topped with crowns, bridges, partial dentures, and full dentures and can  replace any number of missing teeth.
  • Dental implants can restore optimal speaking and chewing ability. For instance, implant-secured dentures restore an average 90% of normal chewing ability as opposed to 10-20% restored chewing ability with removable dentures.

Drawbacks of Dental Implants

As with all dental procedures, dental implants do have a few drawbacks. For instance, dental implants are one of the more expensive restorative procedures and, unfortunately, most dental insurance either does not cover dental implants or will only cover a single part of the procedure, such as the cost of the prosthetic. Additionally, the amount of time required from start to finish for dental implant placement can range from as little as six months to as long as 12 months.

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

Not everyone qualifies for dental implant placement. Factors that could impact your candidacy for dental implants include:

Age
Children and younger teens cannot have dental implants placed because it could affect the proper growth of the jaw.
Compromised jaw bone tissue
Dental implants must be placed in strong, healthy bone tissue and people who have lost significant bone density may not qualify for implant placement. In some instances, though, performing a bone graft can strengthen a patient’s bone tissue enough to support implants.
Lifestyle factors
A record of poor oral hygiene and frequent use of tobacco products are two factors that will disqualify a person for dental implant placement. Both of these factors greatly increase the chances of implant failure.

I was recommended this practice from another dentist who told me this is where she would send her own family. I can definitely see why. This is a state of the art practice that is clean, modern, and well lit. The staff did a superb job.

Everything about my experience was enjoyable. I felt like the practice used all of the most advanced and best technology out there which gave me a wonderful feeling of confidence. They were very professional and straight forward and I have never had a better dentistry experience. I'd highly recommend checking them out if you're looking for a new dentist. They're friendly and efficient and they really do know what they're doing there.

Dr Zelby has been my dentist now for almost 17 years. Not only is he a really nice person, his dentistry is completely top notch. If you need any restorations, I don't think that there is another place to even consider. You'll be amazed with his work!

Dr. Levine was great, and Dr. Zelby stopped by and answered some questions I had about sheering forces on enamel. They were both very friendly, and the hygenist (whose name I forget, unfortunately) gave one of the most thorough cleanings I've ever had. The office was clean, the devices all seem shiny and well maintained, and overall it was a great experience

After going to another dentist, doctor Zelby was able to fix my front two teeth so that the front two teeth were back to the same length and color. I'm so thankful he was able to make them look normal again. Dr. Zelby and his staff are so pleasant to be around as well. I highly recommend this office if you have a major problem with your teeth that need to be fixed. He can get it done and he will make sure you are happy.

I had been going to the same dentist for many years and switched to Aesthetic and Implant recently. My experience with Dr Levine was incredible. I cannot be happier with the decision I made. The cleaning and other services I received were well above and beyond any other I have ever had. Highly recommend this practice to everyone!

Couldn't be happier! Absolutely worth the travel time. Dr Zelby is without doubt the best - caring, knowledgeable, reassuring and very professional. Couldn't ask for better dentistry. Staff also very competent and professional. Beautiful, clean environment

Megan is the best dental hygienist I’ve ever had. She does a phenomenal job keeping your teeth clean, is super nice, and makes you feel right at home. The whole staff is very friendly and I couldn’t recommend this place enough!
