Dentures can be a major hassle. Speaking and chewing is often difficult, and denture adhesives are messy and frustrating. If you’re tired of struggling with your dentures, it may be time to consider implant-supported dentures. This treatment fixes dentures into place so that they no longer rest on your gums. Instead, they are fixed to your jaw by means of dental implants. Although still removable for cleaning, implant-supported dentures will remain firmly in place so that you can eat and speak without fear of embarrassment. Your Atlanta dentist, Dr. David Zelby, discusses the process of securing dentures with dental implants.
Procedures for Implant-Supported Dentures
When securing dentures, the first step is to place the implants into the jawbone. This procedure will first require an x-ray to decide whether there is enough bone to support the dental implants. If enough bone is not present, bone grafting can provide the necessary bone. If the patient has enough bone to support the dental implants, he or she can undergo the first of two surgeries. During the first surgery, the implant is placed below the gum line. This procedure requires an incision in the gum and the jawbone so that the implant can be placed into the proper position. After the implant is placed, the gums are stitched closed.
It is necessary for time to pass to allow the dental implants to fuse to the jawbone after the first surgery. For the first 3-5 weeks of this healing period, temporary dentures should not be worn. However, after that brief respite, patients can wear temporary dentures until the next surgery, which takes place 4-6 months after the first.
The second surgery uncovers the tops of the dental implants to fasten healing abutments to them. Patients will wear these special abutments for about two weeks to ensure proper gum growth. They will then be replaced with regular abutments.
The final step involves the creation and attachment of the new dentures. Our laboratory will custom make the dentures so that they fit properly into your mouth. Dr. Zelby will then place and secure the dentures, ensuring a proper fit, and you will be free to enjoy your new smile.
